CIS of Atlanta and Morehouse College partner with local barbers for "Looking Like Men" event

Local barbers provide free haircuts to young men at Herndon Elementary School

Herndon Elementary School turned into a firstclass barbershop as students received haircuts during the "Look Like Men" event this fall.

For the second year in a row, barbers from Upper Cuts, Philly's Finest and Off The Hook barbershops spent a day at Atlanta's Herdon Elementary School providing haircuts to the schools' male students. The annual "Looking Like Men," event is organized by Herdon Elementary Schools' Communities In Schools of Atlanta Program Coordinator, Nakia Parnell, and a group of dedicated volunteers from Morehouse College.

"I noticed that a number of our young men were not getting haircuts regularly when I started at Herndon last year," said Parnell. "For some parents, a $10 haircut is simply beyond their means. For others, transportation, lack of a babysitter or conflicting work schedules can be a challenge. I have always believed that looking good and feeling good about yourself enhances your performance in school, at work or with anything you set out to achieve."

Volunteer barbers provided more than forty haircuts during this year's event. "I hope to see this event continue to grow. We appreciate our volunteers and hope they derived as much from this experience as our students," said Parnell.
